Fireworks to be held on Square in Washington

The Washington-Wilkes Independence Day celebration will start Wednesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. on The Square.

The annual fireworks celebration, provided by Melrose Pyrotechnics, is scheduled to get underway just after dark, around 9:30 p.m.

For entertainment, the band Steel Cross, now renamed The Remedy, will delight the crowd with a mix of rock, country, and oldies, and the Dazzling Dolls, twirlers under the direction of Jillian Andrews, will perform.

Also, the Washington Fire Department will provide a cooling spray of water for kids.

“People might want to bring a change of clothes for their children, so they can enjoy the water,” said Erin Pollock, tourism director.

There will be spin-art and face pointing for children as well.

In addition, vendors will be offering hamburgers and hotdogs, pizza, baked goods, fried Oreos, handmade jewelry, handbags, and so forth.

Along with the Wednesday night celebration, the annual Independence Day parade will take place on Thursday, July 4, beginning at 8 a.m. at Fort Washington Park, located behind the Wilkes County Courthouse.
